Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent, after Asia. At about 30,370,000 km˛ (11,730,000 mi˛) including adjacent islands, it covers 6.0% of the Earth's total surface area, and 20.4% of the total land area. With more than 890,000,000 people (as of 2005) in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14% of the world's human population.
The African continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones. Because of the lack of natural regular precipitation and irrigation, as well as virtually no glaciers or mountain aquifer systems there is no natural moderating effect on the climate except near the coasts.
Although European speculation about the nature of Africa south of Sahara (Aethiopia) dates back more than two millennia, Africa is generally assumed to be the continent longest inhabited by human beings.

The name Africa is a derivative of the ancient Egyptian word "n'fr" which is the root for "good", "beautiful", "perfection" or "noble". The name may have originated from an extinct language known as Proto-Kordofanian, the language from which most African languages originate. The word is easy to trace in many African languages, because it has mutated very little over several millennia. Variants of the word include words such as nfura, mphura, ifra, furo, fura, fur, ophir, afar, ofre, etc. The Roman suffix "ca" denotes "country or land".
The same root word is commonly found in names of ancient Egyptians, most famously Nefertiti. Other names such as Snefru, Banafrit (beautiful soul), Nafre (goodness), Nafrini (she brings beauty), Nafrit, Nafretiri (beautiful creation), Tanafriti (she of the beautiful land), etc were common in ancient Egypt, and are still found all across Africa. While clearly there was no formal process to name the entire continent, in actuality the name Africa translates as "Land of Perfection".
Many communities in Africa today retain the ancient versions of the name... including the Afar (Danakil), as well as Darfur. The name Africa came into Western use when the Roman province of Africa was established in the second century BC in the area roughly corresponding to modern-day Tunisia. It took its name from Africa terra — "land of the Afri" (plural, or "Afer" singular). Afri was the name of several peoples who dwelt in North Africa near the provincial capital, Carthage.
